Understanding Lymphedema
Symptoms and Causes
Lymphedema is a disorder of the lymphatic system. This system removes waste material, called lymph, from your cells and organs and carries it to your lymph nodes to be processed. When someone develops lymphedema, their lymph doesn’t drain properly. This causes the primary symptoms of lymphedema: severe swelling in the limbs, especially the legs.
Most people develop lymphedema after undergoing cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy or surgery to remove cancerous growths.
In addition to swelling, lymphedema symptoms include the following:
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the limbs
- Restricted range of motion, which impacts mobility
- Hardening or thickening of the skin
A Multifaceted Approach to Lymphedema Care
Our team will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your symptoms and goals. Some of the treatments we might incorporate into this plan include the following:
- Manual Lymph Drainage: This hands-on technique enhances lymph production and flow. Our treatments are customized to fit your diagnosis and specific lymph flow impairment.
- Compression Bandaging: Beginning from the fingers and toes, we provide multi-layer bandaging suited to your needs. This approach complements our manual lymph drainage and promotes lymph movement out of the affected area.
- Fitting for Compression Garments: Compression garments can help reduce lymphatic swelling, but proper fitting is crucial. Our team ensures that day and nighttime garments fit you perfectly while determining the best compression level.
- Exercise: A healthy lymphatic system thrives on movement. We’ll instruct you on exercises that promote lymphatic flow.
- Home Care and Self-care Training: We’ll guide you on skincare, the correct use of garments, and other essential self-care routines.
